HP Privacy Statement

HP recognizes that privacy is a fundamental human right and further recognizes the importance of privacy, security and data protection to our customers and partners worldwide. As a global organization, with legal entities, business processes, management structures, and technical systems that cross international borders, we strive to provide protections across all of our operations that exceed legal minimums and to deploy consistent, rigorous policies and procedures.

This Privacy Statement informs you about our privacy practices and the choices available to you, as well as the rights you can exercise regarding your personal data, including information that may be collected from your online activity, device usage, and interactions with HP, such as when you contact our customer service department. This Privacy Statement applies to all HP companies and to all websites, domains, services (including device management), applications, subscriptions (e.g., Instant Ink), and products owned by HP and its subsidiaries (collectively, “HP Services”). Accessing these links will take you away from HP Services and may result in another company collecting or sharing information about you. We do not control, endorse, or make any representations regarding these third-party websites or their privacy practices, which may differ from ours. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of all sites with which you interact before allowing the collection or use of your personal data.

Using these features may result in the collection or sharing of information about you, depending on the feature. We encourage you to review the privacy policies and settings of the social media platforms you use and to ensure that you understand the information those sites collect, use, and share.
  • Other personally identifiable information: Examples of other personally identifiable information we may collect about you include product serial numbers, information you provide when interacting with us in person, online, by phone or email with our service centers, customer support, or other customer service channels, responses to customer surveys or contests, or additional information you have provided to us in order to facilitate the provision of HP Services and respond to your requests. INFORMATION COLLECTED AUTOMATICALLY ABOUT THE USE OF HP SERVICES

  • Product usage data: We collect product usage data, such as pages printed, print mode, media used, ink or toner brand, printed file format (.pdf, .jpg, etc.), application used for printing (Word, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, etc.), file size, date and time, and the usage and status of other printer consumables. We do not scan or collect the content of any files or information that an application might display.

Examples of the data we collect include information related to memory and processor performance, environmental conditions and system failures, printing events, features and alerts used—such as “Low Ink” notifications—the use of photo cards, fax, scanner, and integrated web server, and other technical information that varies by device.
  • Website browsing data: We collect information about your visits and activity on HP websites, apps, or websites “powered by” other companies on our behalf, including the content (and advertising) you view and interact with, the website address from which you arrived, and other clickstream behavior (such as the pages you visit, the links you click, or the items you have added to your cart). Some of this data is collected through our Automated Data Collection Tools, which include cookies, web beacons, and embedded web links. For more information, see How HP Uses Automated Data Collection Tools.
  • Aggregated or anonymous data: We may obtain anonymous survey responses or anonymous, aggregated information about how HP Services are used. During our operations, we may also apply a de-identification or anonymization process to your data to prevent you from being identified through the use of that data with currently available technology.

THIRD-PARTY INFORMATION

We collect data from the following third parties:

  • Data brokers, social media platforms, and advertising networks: commercially available data, such as name, address, email address, preferences, interests, and certain demographic data. For example, personal data may be collected when you access our apps and log in via social media (for example, when you log in to our apps using Facebook or other social media credentials). The basic information we receive may depend on your social media account’s privacy settings.
  • HP Partners: If you purchase HP Services through an HP partner, we may receive certain information about the purchase you made from that partner.
  • Credit reporting and fraud prevention agencies: Data collected to prevent fraud and in connection with credit decisions.
  • HP Enterprise customers: To provide certain HP Services to businesses, a designated representative within your organization (such as a member of the IT department) may provide your business contact information to HP.
  • Analytics service providers: We also receive non-personal data, such as aggregated or de-identified profile/demographic data, and data from third parties such as companies specializing in providing business data, analytics, and software-as-a-service (SaaS).

In order to provide certain HP Services to businesses, a designated representative at your company or organization (such as a member of the IT department) may provide your business contact information to HP. Where appropriate, we may use the information provided by you or your employer, as well as information available publicly and from other online or offline sources, to conduct due diligence checks on business contacts as part of our anti-corruption compliance program.

We also receive non-personal data, such as aggregated or de-identified profile/demographic data, and third-party data, such as from companies specializing in providing business data, analytics, and software-as-a-service (SaaS).

In order to ensure data accuracy and provide an excellent customer experience by improving personalized services, content, marketing, and ads, in some cases we may link or combine the information we obtain from the various sources mentioned above with the information we collect from you. For example, we may compare geographic information obtained from commercial sources with the IP address obtained through our Automated Data Collection Tools to determine your general geographic location. Information may also be linked using a unique identifier, such as a cookie or account number.

Where appropriate, we will obtain information to conduct due diligence checks on business contacts as part of our anti-corruption compliance program and in accordance with our legal obligations.

IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO PROVIDE INFORMATION

You are not required to share the personal information we request. However, if you choose not to do so, in some cases we may not be able to provide you with HP Services, certain specialized features, or effectively respond to some of your inquiries.

Children’s Privacy

HP does not knowingly collect information from children in accordance with local laws, nor does it target websites or mobile applications to children.

How do we keep your data secure?

To prevent unauthorized loss, access, use, or disclosure, and to ensure the proper use of information, we use appropriate physical, technical, and administrative procedures to protect the data we collect and process. HP retains data as required or permitted by law, and as long as the data continues to serve a legitimate business purpose.

When collecting, transferring, or storing sensitive data, such as tax information, we use various additional security technologies and procedures to protect your personal data from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. When transmitting highly sensitive information (such as a credit card number or password) over the Internet, we protect it using encryption, for example, with the latest versions of the Transport Layer Security (“TLS”) protocol.

As part of real-time payment processing, we also utilize fraud management services. This service provides us with an additional layer of security to protect against credit card fraud and safeguard your financial data in accordance with industry standards.

How do we share your data?

We only share your personal data as described below and, where applicable, in accordance with existing contractual obligations:

Sharing information with HP companies

We may transfer your personal data to other HP entities in the United States and around the world for the purposes set forth in this Privacy Statement. To ensure the security of all your personal data and as part of our participation in the APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules, Binding Corporate Rules, and Privacy Shield programs, HP entities are contractually obligated to comply with our privacy requirements. In addition, we annually communicate our privacy guidelines to HP employees as part of our mandatory HP Integrity training.

In cases where the aforementioned international privacy programs do not apply, by accepting HP’s Privacy Statement during product registration, service enrollment, account creation, or the provision of your personal data, you consent to the transfer of personal data to HP’s entire global network of entities.

SHARING INFORMATION WITH SERVICE PROVIDERS AND PARTNERS

We engage service providers or partners to manage or provide assistance with certain aspects of our business operations on our behalf. These service providers or partners, who may be located in the United States or elsewhere in the world, may provide services such as credit card processing and fraud management services, customer service, sales on our behalf, order processing, product delivery, content personalization, advertising and marketing activities (including digital and personalized advertising), IT services, email service providers, data hosting, online support, debt collection, and management or support for HP websites. Our service providers and partners are contractually obligated to protect the personal data they receive from us and are prohibited from using personal data for any purpose other than the performance of the services requested by HP.

We also take the necessary steps to ensure adequate protection for any transfer of personal data in accordance with applicable law, for example, by entering into European Union standard contractual clauses with the service provider or partner; relying on the Privacy Shield certification, other approved codes of conduct or certification mechanisms; or relying on binding and enforceable commitments from the service provider. If you would like to receive more information about the relevant safeguards, please contact the HP Privacy Office.

SHARING OTHER INFORMATION WITH ADVERTISERS

We may also transfer your information to advertising partners (including ad networks, advertising service providers, and other service providers we may use) so that they can recognize your devices and provide you with content and ads based on your interests. Such information may include your name, mailing address, email address, device ID, or other identifiers in encrypted form. Providers may process the information in a non-identifiable manner or by using hashes. These providers may collect additional information about you, such as your IP address and information about your browser or operating system, and combine this information with information from other companies in the data cooperatives in which we participate.

SHARING INFORMATION WITH THIRD PARTIES

We may also share your personal data with: (i) credit reporting and fraud prevention agencies; (ii) debt collection agencies (in the event of outstanding debts owed to us); or (iii) insurance companies if you have purchased an insurance policy through us (for example, Care Packs). If you choose to provide personal data to other companies, such data will be handled in accordance with those companies’ privacy policies, which may differ from HP’s policies and practices.

CORPORATE TRANSACTIONS

Circumstances may arise in which, for strategic or other business reasons, HP may decide to sell, acquire, merge, or reorganize its businesses. In connection with such transactions, we may disclose or transfer your personal data to prospective or actual buyers, or receive personal data from sellers. Our goal is to ensure that your personal data is adequately protected in these types of transactions.

COMPLIANCE WITH LAW

We may also share your personal data when we believe, in good faith, that we are required to do so in order to: (i) respond to duly authorized requests for information from law enforcement agencies, regulators, courts, and other public authorities, including compliance with certain national security or law enforcement requirements; (ii) comply with laws, regulations, subpoenas, or court orders; (iii) investigate and help prevent security threats, fraud, or other criminal or malicious activities; (iv) exercise or protect the rights and property of HP and its subsidiaries; or (v) protect the rights or personal safety of HP, our employees, and third parties regarding the use of HP’s property, to the extent permitted and in accordance with the requirements of applicable law.

Please refer to our Data Collection and Use Matrix for more information on how and with whom we share your data.

How we use automated data collection tools

We use and allow other companies to use cookies, clickstream data, pixels, web beacons, web forms, and other similar technologies (collectively referred to as “Automated Data Collection Tools”) on HP Services. We do this to understand how HP Services are used; improve your user experience and enable personalized content and features; optimize our advertising and marketing; and allow other advertising companies to help us deliver interest-based ads across the Internet.

You can learn more about Automated Data Collection Tools at: www.allaboutcookies.org.

ONLINE AUTOMATED DATA COLLECTION TOOLS

Whenever you visit any HP website, the site may store or retrieve information in your browser, typically in the form of cookies, which are text files containing small amounts of information. This information may relate to you, your preferences, or your device, and is primarily used to enhance your experience when visiting our website. Generally, the information does not directly identify you, but it can provide you with a more personalized web experience.

HP uses Automated Data Collection Tools for the following reasons:

Strictly necessary tools These tools are necessary for the website to function and cannot be disabled. Without them, the website or the service you are requesting could not be provided, as we would be unable to display the appropriate content based on the type of device you are using.
Performance and analytics tools These tools collect aggregated, anonymous, and statistical data that enable HP to evaluate, optimize, and improve the content, quality, and performance of its websites.

We use our own or third-party Automated Data Collection Tools to understand how you use our websites and services in order to improve their performance and develop them in line with the preferences of our customers and visitors. For example, we may use Automated Data Collection Tools to test different layouts and ensure we maintain a consistent and uniform look across our websites; track and analyze trends in user interaction with our websites and communications; track errors; and evaluate the effectiveness of our promotional campaigns. We use Adobe Analytics and Google Analytics, from Google Inc., for example, to track website usage and activity.

In general, the data collected is aggregated to identify usage patterns and trends for business analysis, site or platform improvement, and performance evaluation. Our Automated Data Collection Tools or the resulting analysis may also be shared with our business partners. The type of information we collect includes the number of visitors to our websites, how many customers log in, when the visit occurs, how long it lasts, and which areas of the websites or services are visited; however, this information is generally not used to personally identify you. We may also receive similar information about people who visit our partners’ websites.

Personalization tools These tools allow us to remember the options you have chosen on our websites (such as your preferred language or the region you are in) and provide enhanced, more personalized features. They can also be used to remember changes you have made to text size, font, and other parts of web pages that you can customize. They can also be used to provide services you have requested, such as watching a video or commenting on a blog. The information collected may be anonymized so that your browsing activity cannot be tracked across other websites.

We also use Automated Data Collection Tools to modify the behavior or appearance of our websites in order to personalize your experience based on information we infer from your behavior on the websites, or on information we already have about you—for example, because you have registered. These tools may be used to personalize the services you receive from us, or the content and appearance we present to you during future visits to our websites. For example, if you customize web pages or register for products or services, Automated Data Collection Tools allow the website server to remember your details. The next time you visit our websites, the information you provided can be retrieved so that you can easily use the website features you previously selected. If you regularly use multiple devices or computers, we may link the Automated Data Collection Tools across those devices so that you continue to receive a personalized online experience. We may also tailor the information you see based on what we already know about you, so you spend less time searching. Through the use of Automated Data Collection Tools, all site visitors can enjoy a unique web experience.

Targeting tools These tools are set up by HP and other companies (such as certain partner stores or advertising partners) and are used to create a profile that enables us to deliver targeted advertising—both on and off HP websites—that is relevant and useful to you. They may reflect de-identified demographic data or other information linked to the information you have voluntarily provided to us (for example, your email address).

They also allow us to collect data related to the HP site and page you have visited, as well as your activities on the HP site. For example, if you visit one of our product pages, we may use cookies to “retarget” you across partner sites with additional offers and promotions for a certain period of time.

You can find more information about our interest-based advertising partners on these websites:

Please note that the above list is not exhaustive and may be updated periodically.

If you are a registered user, the information collected on our websites will no longer be anonymous, and we may use it in conjunction with other information we have or infer about you to personalize the content, services, advertising, and offers we provide to you.

Automated Data Collection Tools that are strictly necessary or used for performance, analytics, and personalization expire after a period of 364 days. Automated Data Collection Tools used for targeting expire after a period of 90 days from your last visit.

When you share information using the social media share button on HP websites, the social media platform will record that you have done so. This information may be linked to targeting/advertising activities. The types of tools used by third parties, as well as how the information generated by them is used, are governed by those companies’ privacy policies.

OTHER AUTOMATED DATA COLLECTION TOOLS

We may use Automated Data Collection Tools, such as web beacons, which are typically transparent graphic images (usually 1 pixel by 1 pixel) used to collect information about your interaction with emails or other communications. Web beacons may be embedded in an HP subscription or marketing communications to determine whether our messages are opened or acted upon, and whether our email tools are functioning properly.

Selecting your Privacy Preferences

You can choose or change your options regarding Automated Data Collection Tools, as well as the receipt of newsletters or general communications, at the time of data collection or through other methods, as described in the following sections. These options do not apply to communications whose primary purpose is to manage order processing, contracts, support, product safety warnings, driver updates, or other administrative or transactional notices where the primary purpose of these communications is not promotional.

MARKETING AND SUBSCRIPTION COMMUNICATIONS

HP’s marketing communications provide information about products, services, or support, and you can choose how these communications are delivered—for example, by mail, email, phone, fax, or via a mobile device. Marketing communications may include information regarding new products or services, special offers, personalized content, targeted advertising, or invitations to participate in market research or compliance reviews. Subscription communications include newsletters and software updates, among other items, that you may have specifically requested or consented to receive.

You can unsubscribe from these general communications using one of the following methods:

  • Select the “Unsubscribe” or “Cancel subscription” link in the email message, or follow the instructions provided in the subscription emails.
  • To unsubscribe from messages you receive on mobile devices, reply to the message with the words “STOP” or “UNSUBSCRIBE.”
  • Contact the Data Protection Officer through the HP Privacy Office. Be sure to include your name, contact information, and relevant details regarding the HP subscriptions or marketing communications you no longer wish to receive.

HP ADS AND OFFERS ON THIRD-PARTY WEBSITES

HP engages service providers to display ads on third-party websites. At times, we may need to share certain personal data, as described in the section on Third-Party Advertising Cookies and Social Media Cookies.

In addition, we use and may allow advertising networks and other third parties to use cookies and other Automated Data Collection Tools to determine how you interact with our websites, communications, and services, as well as selected partner websites, and to identify your interests, create profiles, and develop interest segments in order to provide advertising that is more relevant and useful to you. For more information, see How HP Uses Automated Data Collection Tools.

AUTOMATED DATA COLLECTION TOOLS: ONLINE

When you visit HP websites, you have the option to accept or configure the types of cookies you want us to place on your browser through our Privacy Preference Center. You can change these settings at any time in the cookie settings.

To opt out of Google Analytics tracking on our websites, visit https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Even if you disable tracking, performance, and analytics features, you may still see non-personalized HP ads through our partners. For example, you might visit a website that compares personal computer features. Based on your interests, our partners may show you ads for HP products.

If you are located in the European Union and wish to disable third-party cookies related to interest-based advertising, visit www.youronlinechoices.eu.

In the United States and Canada, we comply with the Digital Advertising Alliance’s industry standards regarding interest-based advertising. In the United States, the Network Advertising Initiative also offers a way to opt out of a large number of advertising cookies. For more information, visit www.networkadvertising.org. Please note that opting out of cookies from certain companies does not mean you will stop receiving online advertising. By doing so, these companies will stop serving you personalized ads based on your preferences and web usage patterns.

Some of the most modern web browsers include “do not track” features. Currently, there is no industry standard for handling “do not track” requests; therefore, our websites may not respond to “do not track” requests or queries from such browsers.

AUTOMATED DATA COLLECTION TOOLS: HP COMMUNICATIONS

You can disable Automated Data Collection Tools, such as web beacons, in email messages by not downloading the images included in the messages you receive (this feature varies depending on the email software you use on your computer). However, Automated Data Collection Tools may not always be disabled in the email message due to certain features of the email software you use. For more information, refer to the information provided by your email software or service provider.

Exercising your rights and contact information

You have the right to request a copy of the personal data you have provided to us or that we hold about you, as well as to request an explanation regarding the processing of such data. In addition, you have the right to withdraw any consent previously given or to request the correction, modification, restriction, anonymization, or deletion of your personal data, as well as to obtain the personal data you provide with your consent or in connection with a contract in a structured, machine-readable format, and to request that we transfer this data to another data controller.

You also have the right to object to the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances, specifically when we use your data for direct marketing or to create a marketing profile. See Selecting Your Privacy Preferences for information on how to exercise your rights regarding marketing.

In certain cases, these rights may be limited; for example, if complying with your request would reveal personal data about another person, or if you ask us to delete information that we are required by law to retain or that we retain for legitimate interests.

Changes to our Privacy Statement

If we amend our Privacy Statement, we will post the revised statement here with the updated revision date. If we make significant changes to our Privacy Statement that materially alter our privacy practices, we may also notify you through other means, such as sending an email or posting a notice on our corporate websites or social media pages, before the changes take effect. This Privacy Statement was last updated in May 2018. This policy will be effective 30 days after its posting, unless we post this HP Privacy Statement earlier than that date, in which case this Privacy Statement will be effective on the earlier of those two dates.
