International Day of Human Space Flight
Did you know that more than 100 HP devices operate every day 400 km above the Earth?
On April 12, we celebrate the International Day of Human Space Flight, marking the first mission of this kind, which took place in 1961. On this occasion, we would like to share something you might not know: our connection with space goes back a long way.
HP has been collaborating with NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration – for over 50 years. During this time, we have delivered technology designed to perform in environments where there’s no room for error.
For example, the famous phrase “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” was transmitted through a Plantronics headset, now part of Poly.
In addition, on the International Space Station there are 100 HP workstations in active use, with another 20 serving as backup systems. Our devices are also part of daily operations at NASA’s mission control center on Earth.
And, in case you were wondering, printing in space is indeed possible. An HP OfficeJet printer adapted to microgravity allows astronauts to print mission procedures and personal documents while in orbit.
We are now entering a new era of space exploration. As a result, the return to the Moon brings us one step closer to Mars.
Our mission is to create technology that pushes the limits of what’s possible. In this way, what we learn in such demanding environments helps us enhance the performance and reliability of everything we build.
Ultimately, these advances drive real improvements that reach from space back to Earth.
